Sluggish Overnight Results for Original Thursday Night Fare

Based on the overall modest overnights for the glut of original programming last night, it is going to be a long summer. The time period return of CBS mainstay “Big Brother” was the highest rated of the lot, but a 3.2 rating/6 share in households at 9 p.m. was 11 percent below the 3.6/ 6 on the year-ago evening. On Wednesday this week, the 3.6 overnight household rating for the two-hour season-premiere of “Big Brother” translated into 5.88 million viewers and a 1.8 rating/8 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data from Nielsen.
“Big Brother” led into the third season premiere of drama “Zoo” at a 2.1/ 4 at 10 p.m., which was nine percent below the 2.3/ 4 for a repeat of “Code Black” on the year-ago evening , and 32 percent below the 9:30 p.m. portion of “ Big Brother” (3.1/ 6).
First in the 10 p.m. hour was NBC medical drama “The Night Shift,” but it only scored a 2.6/ 5 in the household overnights. Third was week two of ABC’s revival of “The Gong Show,” which at a 2.3/ 4 was eight percent below the 2.5/ 5 one week earlier. And that 2.5 overnight rating translated into just 3.89 million viewers and a 0.9/ 4 in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.
Earlier in the evening on NBC was “Hollywood Game Night” (#2: 2.6/ 5) into the return of recent returning game show “The Wall” (#2: 2.9/ 5 at 9 p.m.).
In series premiere news, ABC’s revival of “Battle of the Network Stars” finished third in the 9 p.m. hour with a 2.7/ 5 in households. Comparably, however, that was up by 50 percent from the 1.8/ 3 for “Boy Band” at 8 p.m. But compared to the year-ago series-premiere of “Greatest Hits” (3.3/ 6 on 6/30/16), it was down by 18 percent.
The 1.8/ 3 in the household overnights for aforementioned “Boy Band” on ABC at 8 p.m. was 18 percent below its already modest 2.2/ 4 debut one week earlier.
Over at Fox was the pairing of “Love Connection” (#3: 2.1/ 4) and “Beat Shazam” (#4: 1.8/ 3), which finished fourth overall for the evening. First for the night was an encore telecast of CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” (#1: 4.3/ 5 at 8 p.m.), which led into a repeat of “Life in Pieces” at a 2.9/ 5 (#1) at 8:30 p.m. And The CW populated the night with back-to-back repeats of “Supernatural,” which averaged a 0.6/ 1 from 8-10 p.m.
