Ratings Breakdown:
With “NCIS” and “Bull” on CBS in repeats, NBC led the Tuesday overnights, besting the No. 2 Eye net by nine percent in households. There were two network series premieres: NBC sitcom “Great News” and CBS spin-off “48 Hours: NCIS.”
With “Fresh Off the Boat” on ABC also an encore, “Great News” was sampled at a second-place 3.4 rating/6 share in the 9 p.m. half hour. Excluding the expanded episode of “The Voice” last week, this was NBC’s best overnight household rating in the time period since the “This Is Us” season-finale on March 14. There is every reason to believe “Great News” will also dominate the half-hour in adults 18-49 (and all the key young adult demographics). But that 3.4 overnight rating held only 54 percent of “The Voice” lead-in (#1: 6.3/10 from 8-9 p.m.). And two of the competing networks were in repeats, so let’s see what happens in future weeks.
A second episode of “Great News” slipped to a 2.8/ 5 (#2) at 9:30 p.m., which outdelivered competing “Imaginary Mary” on ABC (#3t: 1.9/ 3) by 47 percent.
On CBS, “48: Hours: NCIS,” yet another attempt to capitalize on the successful “NCIS” theme, opened with a respectable second-place 3.8/ 7 in the 10 p.m. hour. Comparably, that trailed competing “Chicago Fire” on NBC (#1: 4.7/ 8) by 19 percent. One week earlier, “NCIS: New Orleans” scored a 6.4/12 in the hour, but failed drama “Limitless” was only at a 3.5/ 6 one year earlier.
In the distant third place position on ABC was drama “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” at a mere 1.6/ 3.
Earlier in the evening on ABC were encore telecasts of “The Middle” (#3: 2.7/ 5), “American Housewife” (#3: 2.0/ 3) and aforementioned “Fresh Off the Boat” (#4: 1.8/ 3) from 8-9:30 p.m. The repeat installments of CBS’ “NCIS” (2: 4.7/ 8) and “Bull” (#1: 4.5/ 7), meanwhile, were at typical non-original levels from 8-10 p.m.
Elsewhere, Fox could not compete with its line-up of sitcoms “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#5: 1.4/ 2) and “The Mick” (#4: 1.6/ 3) and the recent revival of “Prison Break” (#3t: 1.9/ 3), which got a slight boost from the 1.7/ 3 one week earlier. And The CW featured “The Flash” (#4: 1.9/ 3), which dropped by 21 percent from the 2.4/ 4 in the household overnights one year earler, and “iZombie” (#5: 0.8/ 1).
