Quiet Return for ‘The Blacklist’ on NBC

THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 2017
Household Rating/Share
CBS: 3.3/ 6, ABC: 3.0/ 5, NBC: 2.8/ 5, Fox: 2.0/ 3, CW: 0.5/ 1
-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
Fox: – 5, NBC: -10, CBS: -33, ABC: -37, CW: -50
-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS topped this third Thursday in April, but was well below average care of encore telecasts of sitcoms “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the night: 5.4/10) and “The Great Indoors” (#2: 3.5/ 6) from 8-9 p.m., and back-to-back episodes of “The Amazing Race” (9 p.m.: #3: 3.0/ 5; 10 p.m.: #2: 2.6/ 5). As the network prepares the primetime blueprints for next season, I personally think “The Amazing Race” would be a great addition in between editions of “Survivor.” But there is no reason to believe “The Great Indoors” will be renewed for a second season. In return series news, two episodes of NBC’s “The Blacklist” were modest at best, with a 3.2/ 5 in the 9 p.m. hour and a 3.3/ 6 at 10 p.m. But that 3.3 overnight household rating at 10 p.m. was 22 percent above the 2.7/ 5 for the season (or series) finale of spin-off “The Blacklist: Redemption” last week. “The Blacklist” is yet another series that does not benefit from a long hiatus.
Earlier in the evening on NBC were sitcoms “Superstore” (#4: 2.2/ 5) and waiting-to-be canceled “Powerless” (#4: 1.4/ 2) from 8-9 p.m.
On ABC, an encore telecast of “Scandal” in place of regularly scheduled “Grey’s Anatomy” at 8 p.m. (#3: 2.5/ 4) led into a dominant 4.1/ 7 for the regularly scheduled edition of “Scandal” at 9 p.m. Sophomore drama “The Catch,” which has little to no chance of a third season renewal, dipped to a third-place 2.4/ 4 at 10 p.m.
Elsewhere, “MasterChef Junior” on Fox (#2: 2.6/ 5 at 8 p.m.) led into a 1.4/ 2 for sure-to-be axed reality/competition “Kicking & Screaming” at 9 p.m. (#4: 1.4/ 2). And The CW capped off the evening with a repeat of veteran “Supernatural” (#5: 0.6/ 1 at 8 p.m.) into a mere 0.3/ 1 for e-sports tournament “H1Z1: Fight for the Crown” at 9 p.m.
